Our Bodies Are Memories of Our Bodies
SUMMARY
Our Bodies Are Memories of Our Bodies is a collection of poetry and visual works by Samoan fa’afafine artist and poet Dan Taulapapa McMullin, rooted in Samoan forms including siapo (barkcloth) geometry, weaving, and the song traditions of Samoan storytelling. The publication explores family, the lives of faʻafafine, desire, loss, and the ways colonialism shapes what bodies carry, what tongues can name, and what forms of sovereignty remain. Poems, marks, and patterns move together across the page, drawing on Indigenous Pacific traditions to give form to what cannot always be spoken or seen, yet nevertheless persists, signing and dancing through memory, ancestry, and the body.
